Most of the housing stock across this stretch - Wheeling and the six towns we drive to - went up between 1938 and 1960, with the median build year landing around 1949. That's old enough that a lot of garages still have original single-panel doors on side-mounted torsion hardware, or narrow single-car openings that don't match anything on a current showroom floor. Parts for that era aren't something every supplier stocks, which is why a repair quote on an older door sometimes takes longer than you'd expect - we're tracking down hardware, not grabbing it off a shelf.
The cold is the other constant. This is a severe cold-climate band, and torsion springs lose temper faster in sustained cold, so winter is when we see the most snapped springs and frozen tracks regardless of which of these towns the call comes from. Weatherstripping on doors from the 1940s and '50s is usually long gone too, so a lot of "my garage is freezing" calls turn into a seal replacement rather than anything mechanical. None of this is unique to one town on this list - it's the age of the stock and the winters, consistently, across all six.
